R T A Service Overview. C T A runs buses (routes 1-206), and elevated trains and subway trains, serving the city and 40 nearby suburbs. Most routes run daily through late evening, every 7 to 15 minutes. Sunday schedules apply on New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. PACE runs buses throughout the suburbs (routes 208 and above) and many routes connect with C T A. Major routes run daily through mid-evening, every 30 to 60 minutes. You can use your C T A Transit Card, Chicago Card, Chicago Card Plus, or C T A Passes to ride. METRA runs 12 suburban commuter train lines from several downtown Chicago terminals. Most bus routes run daily through late evening (see First Bus Last Bus Times), every 10 to 20 minutes. All routes have timetables. Sunday schedules apply on New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Always check the destination sign; not all buses travel to the end of the line. Also, a few bus routes have branches. Buses stop about every two blocks at posted signs, which give basic route and service information. The Owl symbol indicates all-night service. Owl service runs every 30 minutes. All buses are accessible. Operators deploy lifts and ramps on request. All stops are announced. All buses have bike racks. Trains. Each rail line has a color name. Most lines run daily, every 7 to 10 minutes, and every 10 to 15 minutes in later evenings. See First Train Last Train Times for hours. There are free connections between all rail lines. Accessible stations are marked with a wheelchair symbol. At stations, a Customer Assistant or Security Guard is on duty to help you. Fare Payment Buses: - When using a Chicago Card or Chicago Card Plus, touch the card to designated pad and go. - When paying with a Transit Card, pass or permit, insert and remove it in the farecard machine on the farebox. The value remaining will show when inserted. If you don’t have enough value left to pay the fare, pay the difference in cash. - When paying with cash, put dollar bills in the center slot, and coins on the left side. - Reduced fare riders (except children 7 to 11) can pay fares with their permits if there is value on the permit. If paying with cash or Reduced Fare Transit Card, show permit to the operator. If using a Reduced Fare Pass, insert the pass first, then the permit.
